Required & Core Courses

Common IGS CORE courses required: these serve as gateway courses to the three thematic majors (ENS, GHS and IAF) in the department, organized by Global Systems: (27 hours)

  1. Cultural systems: ANT 101 or GEO 111 and one Foreign Language at 251 level (6 hour
  2. Environment and Health systems: ENS 250 and GHS 200 (6 hours)
  3. Economic systems: SEP 200 or ECN 150/151 (3 Hours)
  4. Political systems: IAF 253 or POL 270 (3 hours)
  5. Information systems: STA 126 (3 hours)
  6. IGS Senior Experience: IGS 401 and IGS 402 (6 hours)
  7. Experiential Requirement: Traditional term long study-abroad, or one Mercer on Mission trip with IGS (ENS, GHS, IAF and/or SEP) eligible courses approved by the IGS department Chair; or one faculty-led study abroad experience pre-approved by the IGS chair.

Course Descriptions

IGS 180.Special Introductory Topics in Global Studies:(Subtitle) (3 hours)

Prerequisite:Permission of Department Chair

Study of an introductory topic not normally offered through regularly scheduled courses. Topics will be announced in advance. The department chair must approve the use of this course to satisfy major and minor requirements in the IGS department. Course cannot be used more than once in a single IGS major or minor. (Occasionally)

IGS 280.Special Intermediate Topics in Global Studies:(Subtitle)(3 hours)

Prerequisite:Permission of Department Chair

Study of a intermediate level topic not normally offered through regularly scheduled courses. Topics will be announced in advance. The department chair must approve the use of this course to satisfy major and minor requirements in the IGS department. (Occasionally)

IGS 380.Special Advanced Topics in Global Studies:(Subtitle) (3 hours)

IGS 390. Colloquium (variable credits 1-3 hours)

Prerequisite: Small-group seminars that address current problems, each focusing on one specific question and producing a joint task force report. Restricted to majors/minors in programs housed in the IGS department. (Occasionally)

IGS 398.Internship in International and Global Studies(variable hours from 3-9)

Prerequisite:Junior or Senior status and Chair's Permission

IGS 401.Senior Design (3 hours)

Prerequisite:senior standing and instructor's permission

The first in a two part course sequence that equips students with the oral, written and research techniques required to carry out an innovative project. (Every year)

IGS 402. Senior Project (3 hours)

Pre-requisite IGS 401

Each student will successfully complete a comprehensive research project utilizing recognized research methodology. Students will present and defend projects with peers and the instructor. (Every year)

IGS 493. Independent Study(3 hours)

Prerequisite:Permission of Department Chair

IGS 496. Independent Research (3 hours)

Prerequisite:Permission of Department Chair

Independent research and writing under supervision of a faculty member. Restricted to majors/minors in programs housed in the IGS department.
