Student Research

Sociology and Criminal Justice students complete an introductory research methods course and then engage in a semester-long study in SOC 405: Empirical Project.  In the Empirical Project class, students select a topic they are interested in exploring and then review literature that addresses their research question.  Students then design their projects, collect and analyze the data- typically by conducting a survey, and then present their results.

Students who complete SOC 405 by their junior year will have the opportunity to further develop their project as an independent study.  This will involve working closely with a Sociology Department faculty member and presenting the results at a regional or national conference.  Click here for examples of student research projects.
